Growing plants from seed is a great way to start gardening earlier in the season. With the right light, soil and some simple equipment, it’s easy to grow from seed to harvest. All you need is a sunny window or some grow lights, a basic seed-starting mix, some trays or small pots, and a seedling heat mat if you want to accelerated growth.

Starting your own seeds indoors expands the selection of crops that you can grow. This is especially relevant because we live in a cold climate with a relatively short growing season. We are located in climate zone 3, so slow maturing crops like peppers, onions, leeks, celery, and tomatoes have to be started before spring in order for them to reach maturity during the summer months. Flavor: Sweet and crunchy

Preparation Ideas: Clean, peel and slice carrots. Bring 3 cm (1″) of salted water to boil in a saucepan. Add the carrot slices. Return to boil, then reduce the heat and cover the pan. Cook until just tender, but not soft. This will take about 10-15 minutes. Drain and eat hot. For extra flavor add salt, pepper and butter.

Planting

Prepare the soil for planting. Make shallow rows 13 mm (1/2″) deep and 45 cm (18″) apart. Tear strips apart and unroll into rows. Water the Seed tape thoroughly, then cover with soil and water thoroughly again. Please note, Seed tapes require consistent moisture to ensure best germination. Uniform soil moisture is critical. Plant in fertile well drained soil. Repeat sowings every 2 weeks until mid-summer for continuous supply of fresh carrots.
