Perlite is lightweight expanded volcanic glass. When mixed with soils, it increases aeration and drainage, which helps root development. It also helps maintain soil moisture for less watering. It is recommended as a starting medium for rooting and germination. Ideal for amending soil and potting mixes.

Description

Our Shelmerdine Perlite is a naturally occurring mineral from expanded volcanic rock and is great as a soil amendment. Perlite improves aeration and drainage in potting mixes, and retains a small amount of moisture. It helps prevent soil compaction and promotes strong root development. It is dusty, so please take care to avoid inhaling the dust. Our Perlite is pH neutral.

What is Perlite exactly? Perlite is a lightweight granular material that’s white in colour. It looks and feels like little bits of polystyrene but is actually made from expanded volcanic glass, heated to 1000°C until it ‘pops’ (like popcorn) to many times its original size. It’s lightweight, sterile, and easy to handle, and is long-lasting. It’s neither alkaline nor acidic. It is non-toxic, clean, disease-free, and extremely lightweight and easy to work with. Perlite is often used in industrial settings as well as in the garden. It’s commonly mixed into such products as lightweight plasters, ceiling tiles, or masonry for stability or as an insulator.

There’s many other uses for Perlite, but to gardeners like us, it’s an essential ingredient in their garden. We love using it for many reason, but the most important one is drainage. Perlite is a natural filtration system, allowing excess water to drain away while retaining a little moisture and catching nutrients that plants need to grow. This is especially true in raised beds and container gardens, in commercial potting soil, but also in the ground as well.

Perlite’s expanded nature makes it extremely porous, so it can absorb water, but it also improves drainage, so is ideal to mix into compost to ensure water drains freely. It’s particularly useful in plant propagation, including taking cuttings and sowing seeds. Other materials that perform similar functions are vermiculite, grit and sharp sand.

Perlite is often combined with other soil amendments such as vermiculite and coir.  For a complete education on perlite, its origins and its uses, click here.

SHELMERDINE IS YOUR SOURCE FOR SOILS AND SOIL AMENDMENTS!

Soils and soil amendments are essential components of gardening, whether it be for indoor plants or outdoor garden beds and projects. At Shelmerdine Garden Center, we carry a wide selection of soils and amendments, such as sand, manure, moss, and more!

Soil amendments are materials added to soil to improve its physical nature. For example, some soils drain poorly, while others are too tightly compacted, so vital nutrients don’t reach plant roots. Soil amendments can help with these issues. Before adding any amendment to soil, it is crucial to do a soil test. Our gardening experts will give you recommendations on what to add to the soil based on what you are planning to plant or grow.

At Shelmerdine, we offer a wide range of soils and soil amendments to help you grow bigger, healthier plants. Our selection includes organic fish compost, vermiculite, perlite, and more. We sell nothing but the best – for the best gardeners!

Soil amendments can improve soil density and loosen up dense soil. They can also help to clump together soil that is too loose, which helps root growth. Some soil amendments, such as coconut coir, can help the soil retain water and nutrients. Others, such as zeolite, can help with clay soil and other hard, compacted soil. We formulate specialty indoor plant soil mixes in house, such as our Bonsai Soil and Aroid Mix, which are otherwise difficult to source.

Soil amendments are a very important component of gardening. At Shelmerdine, we look forward to offering you products as well as our experienced knowledge of soils and soil amendments. Visit us today!
